Amsterdam bans creation of new hotels
Another piece in the overall strategy to reduce tourist flows to the city
Mønsted Kalkgruber, in Denmark, has also been operating as a tourist destination for a quarter of a century now
Mønsted Kalkgruber, located west of Viborg (Denmark), is the world's largest lime pit. For the past 25 years, it has also been a tourist attraction with visitors flocking in to see the operation of the mine. Plus, the limestone pits are also known for an environment that is absolutely perfect as a wintering place for bats and for ripening tasty pit cheeses.
In that context, visitors have been transported by a specially adapted small electric mine train, pulled by two locomotives called Claus and Svend. They have served the operations in the mine dutifully for a decade but were decommissioned in 2019. The train, however, is still fully functional and as such, it has been put up for auction on a Danish website.
The electric train with 2 locomotives and 4 carriages with room for a total of 48 people was built by Alan Keef Limited in England. The locomotives and wagons appear in nice and well-maintained condition. Included in the sales package are nearly 30 meters of rails (600 mm gauge) and train report from Alan Keef Ltd., a circuit diagram, user and maintenance instructions and various spare parts.
Ané Gyldholm, managing director at Campen Auktioner, states: "The train comes with its own unique story and a nostalgic look into a new future. Rarely have we had such a special electric vehicle at an auction like this one! Whether the mine train ends up in an amusement park in Denmark, in a zoo abroad or somewhere else entirely, only time will tell.”
The auction itself with the train from the Mønsted Kalkgruber lime mine ends on Monday, 20 March at 8 p.m. (CET).
