The event is organised by Vienna University and is aimed at getting young people interested in science
Yesterday, the University of Vienna launched a carbon-neutral film festival - powered by three bicycles. The festival will last until 19 June and will feature eight films aimed at children, trying to get them interested in science.
Moreover, the screening locations will change every week, starting from the University Campus and going to places like Copa-Beach Skatepark and the Prater in June. According to a statement by the university, the festival will be free and no prior registration is required. People are encouraged to bring a blanket and enjoy the outdoors with a picnic and their kids.
One very unique feature of the festival is the fact that it will be climate neutral and all the equipment will be powered by three bicycles. Scientists, students and visitors will have to pedal together to keep the show running - combining engineering as well as a bit of climate awareness.
The university developed this concept for the event with the help of the Cycle Cinema Club – a local group which does similar pedal-powered events and has the technical know-how on what they require. The added benefit is that going to the cinema can now make you more fit.
As a subject, science can seem very dense and unapproachable – which provides the whole reason for the festival in the first place. However, during several of the events, scientists from the university will hold talks on astrophysics and climate science appropriately themed to the films.
Karoline Iber, Managing Director of the Children's Office at the University of Vienna was quoted by the ORF explaining that the film selection was curated to appeal to young people and teenagers, aimed at inspiring enthusiasm. Moreover, it should help introduce a new generation to the University and its benefits, especially considering there are some who have little contact with the academic sphere.
