Additional 1,6 million euro for the Brussels`pedestrian zone

Once completed, it will be the second biggest pedestrian scheme in Europe

1.6 million euro in additional spending has been set aside to speed-up the completion of the Brussels’ pedestrian scheme, in particular between Place Fontainas and Rue des Riches Claires. The scheme aims to open the central boulevard and encourage shoppers to the area by closing it to traffic. However, the scheme has been roughly implemented so far and the shops and restaurants in this area have said the scheme has hit business.

The city wants to finish the southern limits of the pedestrian zone by September before the municipal elections in October. In fact Brussels residents have to pay twice but also, speeding-up the project will be at the expense of quality. Once completed, this would give Brussels the second biggest pedestrian scheme in Europe, after Venice.
