And the winner is...Mayo County Council!

The Irish county swept the board at the 2020 Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards

Boasting the longest coastline along the Wild Atlantic Way, replete with breathtaking views and adventure options, bristling with vibrant towns and villages just waiting to be explored, and home to Croagh Patrick, the sacred mountain of the Irish since Neolithic times, County Mayo has a lot to offer, and not just in terms of tourism.

Mayor County Council is the top local authority of the year

Yesterday, Mayo County Council made more news by scooping the 2020 Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards, winning the top Local Authority of the Year award and beating the solid competition in three other categories. The winning projects which highlight Co Mayo’s diverse achievements are:

  • Making Positive Choices in Health & Wellbeing. This community-based scheme has addressed road safety issues on the Mayo Islands – nine inhabited islands off the coast of County Mayo where poor physical infrastructure is a common concern.
  • Weather Impact Register App – WIRE in Local Authority Innovation. The WIRE app provides a simple tool for local authorities to record and collate the actual impacts and some of the associated costs of climate change in their areas.
  • Virtual Mayo Day 2020 in Festival of the Year. Over the last six years, Mayo residents have flown the green and red flag showcasing pride in their country, people and heritage. In the extraordinary Covid-stricken year of 2020, the people of Mayo got together again, albeit virtually, reaching out to their communities and diaspora across the world to offer hope and a sense of unity at a time of global crisis.

Held in conjunction with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, the Excellence in Local Government Awards showcase the best practices in Ireland’s local government. They serve as recognition to the skills, hard work, innovation and enthusiasm within local councils that can often go unnoticed.
