Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis notes that all citizens, regardless of income, must have the right to take care of their health and wellbeing

On 20 October, the Greek capital announced that it has launched a new initiative to promote exercise and a healthy way of life. More specifically, the City of Athens collaborated with the Panhellenic Gymnastics Association to give hundreds of residents free access to sports facilities.

Exercise for free

Every morning from Monday to Saturday, citizens can exercise at the Panhellenic Gymnastics Association’s facility in Pedion tou Areos. There, they can choose to take part in 8 different activities and classes:

  1. Gymnastics for adults
  2. Special fitness programmes for senior citizens
  3. Swimming lessons
  4. Pilates
  5. Yoga
  6. Martial arts and self-defence
  7. Fencing
  8. Table tennis

To take advantage of this new opportunity, citizens must first register at the association’s offices in Kypseli. After this, they can receive a membership card which will allow them to enter and use the facilities for free. Taking this further, those interested in attending classes must also register their interest and reserve their spot online via rantevou.cityofathens.gr.

All citizens deserve access to sports

In a press release, the Mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyannis commented on the initiative, noting that all citizens must have access to facilities that allow them to take care of their health and wellbeing. What is more, he stressed the importance of investing in sports:

"We continue to invest in upgrading the quality of life of Athenians by taking dynamic initiatives in the field of sports, with free programmes for all adults. Sport as part of everyday life is associated with health and wellbeing, which is why in the Municipality of Athens we believe that all citizens, regardless of income, should have free access to it. We warmly thank the historic Gymnastics Association of our city, the Panhellenic, for this creative and valuable collaboration.”

Before using the association’s facilities, one must present proof of vaccination, recovery from COVID, or a negative test.
