The capital has mapped 8 accessible routes for individuals with motor and visual impairments
On 3 December, the International Day of People with Disabilities, the City of Athens announced that it has recorded and mapped 8 routes for people with motor and visual impairments. To launch this project, the Greek capital collaborated with the tourist guide This is Athens and “With Other Eyes”, an organisation founded and organised by people with disabilities.
On the Accessible Routes website, one can find a total of 8 routes (4 for people with motor disabilities and 4 for people with visual impairments). As the capital has launched this initiative for both residents and tourists, all routes are available in Greek and English.
The first of these routes (Historic Heart to Urban Soul of Athens), allows visitors and residents to experience the evolution of Athens. Therefore, it takes them through Syntagma Square, Ermou Street, Church of Panagia Kapnikarea, Monastiraki Square, Thissio, and Gazi.
The second route (Ancient Athens Uncovered) explores the ancient treasures and landmarks of the capital city, while the third (Origins of Modern Athens) demonstrates that the Greek capital is so much more than its ancient relics.
Lastly, the final route (National Garden of Athens and Surrounding Highlights) takes visitors and residents through the former royal estate and allows them to see both ancient and modern treasures.
Upon selecting one of the above routes, one will receive an overview of the itinerary and its points of interest. What is more, they will receive general accessibility information, a route description, and a map. Beyond this, the Accessible Routes website will also provide them with information regarding the accessibility of public transport and restrooms in the capital.
With this project, the City of Athens ensures that residents and tourists have access to everything they need to safely explore the capital.
