On 29 June, the City of Athens announced that it has taken an important step towards modernising the Municipal Cleaning Department and the Greek capital. In a press release, the municipality reported that the streets and neighbourhoods of Athens will now benefit from 37 state-of-the-art Glutton vacuum cleaners.

According to the Mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyannis, the adoption of this new technology means that “road cleaning in Athens is moving to another era.” This modern equipment is currently used in several European countries and it has numerous benefits for both cities and citizens.

The 37 new street sweepers are electric, quiet, and environmentally friendly as they do not produce pollutants. On its website, the City of Athens explained that the electric vacuums result in cleaner streets as they absorb all types of waste, from dry leaves to cans of soft drinks and plastic bottles.

Taking this further, the Glutton vacuum cleaners will significantly improve the quality of life in the Greek capital. In addition to cleaning the centre and its 129 neighbourhoods, the street sweepers will also make life easier for Athens’ cleaners; that is, the operation of the new technology requires less physical exertion than former cleaning equipment.

Mayor Bakoyannis further expressed his delight with the 37 state-of-the-art sweepers, noting: “Apart from changing the way Athens is now cleaned, we also had a very important goal in front of us: to give the people of our Municipal Cleaning Department the right tools to do their job.

So, after years, the Municipality of Athens is renewing and modernising its equipment, using the cleaning tools used by the municipalities of several European capitals. It is something that Athenians are entitled to, so that they can enjoy the city.”

The machines will be used twice a day, every morning and afternoon. With the adoption of these cleaners, the municipality proves its dedication to improving the quality of life, modernising the capital, and creating a cleaner city.
