The city hall of Bari has started a four-month experiment with paying people to cycle to work, joining other European cities in trying to boost bicycle use to boost people’s health, reduce air pollution and cut fossil fuel consumption. It is expected that the number of cyclist will be doubled by the end of the experiment. Cyclist will be paid for each kilometer, made on a bicycle, but they won’t receive more than 25 euros per month.
For the for implementation of the project, 545 000 Euros have been allocated to the budget of the municipality of Bari. In addition to this, authorities will support financially those who do not yet have their own bicycle. A discount of 150 Euros will be given to those who want to buy a factory bike, a discount of 250 Euros is available for the purchase of electric and 100 Euros for the purchase of a used bicycle.
