Cities can now apply for the 2022 European Capital of Smart Tourism competition

Applications must be submitted by 16 June

The European Commission has announced that applications are now open for this year’s European Capital of Smart Tourism competition. This is an EU initiative which aims to promote smart tourism by recognising the outstanding achievements of tourism destinations in one of the following four categories: sustainability, accessibility, digitalisation, cultural heritage and creativity.

What is the process?

Tourism destinations which are interested in applying can submit their applications by 17:00 CET on 16 June 2021. Following this, a panel of experts will assess and examine all the candidates who have applied for the competition before choosing a maximum of seven shortlisted cities.

The shortlisted cities will then be invited to showcase their candidature in front of the European Jury. This jury will consider the shortlisted applicants and select two cities which will receive the titles of European Capitals of Smart Tourism 2022.

It must be noted that this year’s competition is the third edition of this EU initiative. Previous winners of the prestigious title were Gothenburg and Málaga in 2020 and Helsinki and Lyon in 2019.

Aims of the competition

Through this exciting initiative, the European Commission seeks to promote the development of smart tourism throughout Europe. Moreover, it helps boost tourism in the cities which are selected as winners of the competition by informing potential tourists of their outstanding achievements. Therefore, it increases their attractiveness and strengthens their growth.

Taking this further, this EU initiative also acts as inspiration for other tourism destinations as it allows them to learn from the best practices of the European Capitals of Smart Tourism. In this way, the competition encourages sustainable socio-economic development across the entire continent.

Those who are interested in applying can submit an application on the European Commission’s website here.
