Discover the new cultural routes of Europe

In April the Council of Europe certified five new routes showcasing the tangible and intangible heritage of the continent. Learn more about them

In the beginning of April, the Governing Board of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe (EPA) has certified five new cultural routes to make a total of 38. The initiative, launched in 1987, showcases concrete tourist paths which take us on a journey to explore the heritage of various European cultures.


Beaches in Normandy, France

From southern England across the Channel to Normandy and northern France, through Belgium, the Netherlands and northern Germany to Berlin, the Liberation Route Europe links the regions along the front of the Western Allied forces in the final stages of the Second World War. Encompassing eight EU-countries, the network based on this route works also with the United States and Canada.

The industrialisation of the Old continent is presented in the European Route of Industrial Heritage, which covers a spectacular number of sites: 1,800 located in 47 countries, with 100 anchor points, 18 regional and 16 thematic routes.

With Le Corbusier Destinations: Architectural Promenades route one wil be inspired with the work of the famous architect, urban planner and designer, whose reputation goes way beyond the boundaries of the continent. Currently, the network is present in Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Argentina and Japan.

And for the sports lover, the newest cycling route named the Iron Curtain Trial that connects the Barents Sea to the Black sea coast, more than 10,400 kilometres long across 20 countries shows the existing lines of division among the European states prior to the revolutions in 1989.

Finally, the European Routes of Reformation presents the European movement of reformation which connects sites, objects and intangible heritage from seven countries in Central Europe.
