The platform was inaugurated by Commissioner Maria Gabriel
The EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Mariya Gabriel has inaugurated a European platform for the exchange of coronavirus related scientific data. The Covid-19 Data Portal, informs the EC representation in Bulgaria, is part of the European coronavirus action plan for science and innovation (ERAvsCorona). It is meant to allow rapid exchange of scientific data and is an important part of the European Union's overall effort to support scientific activities in Europe and worldwide.
In this regard, Commissioner Gabriel said: "The launch of the scientific data exchange platform is an important, concrete step that will enhance coordination in the fight against coronavirus. Based on our support for free access to scientific data, it is now important to consolidate data, accelerate common action, and assist scientists in finding solutions to COVID-19. Only through common and coordinated research and measures will we be able to understand the virus more quickly, diagnose it more effectively and tackle the pandemic. "
The new platform provides a freely accessible and proven pan-European environment where scientists can store and share scientific data, e.g. virus data, protein structures, pre-clinical and clinical trial data, and epidemiological data. The platform will also share research literature, links to databases, specialized software, as well as guides for structuring anti-virus information.
"Scientists around the world are actively working to combat the pandemic. At the same time, no scientist, laboratory or country can solve the problem alone. That is why we support researchers through access to data and the ability to share their scientific output. I want to express my gratitude and support to the scientists who work day and night to find solutions that will be of benefit to us all. That is why I invite scientists to actively take advantage of the data exchange opportunities that the platform provides, " added Commissioner Mariya Gabriel.
The platform is the result of the joint work of the European Commission, the European Institute of Bioinformatics at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL-EBI), the COMPARE and Elixir projects, as well as Member States and other partners.
