European municipalities will have a final chance to apply for a voucher to fund the installation of high-speed free WIFI networks in their communities. The call will be opened on 17 March 2020 at 13.00 CET and will close at 17.00 CET on 18 March 2020, informed the European Commission.
The fourth and final call of the WiFi4EU initiative has a budget of 14.2 million euros. This time the Commission will distribute 947 vouchers at a first-come, first-served basis to municipalities across Europe.
In order to apply for the 15,000 euros voucher, municipalities must be registered on the WiFi4EU portal before the call. The winning municipalities will be able to to set up free Wi-Fi networks in public spaces.
The WiFi4EU voucher provides a fixed amount of funding of 15,000 euros per municipality. The amount is aimed to support the installation of state-of-the-art Wi-Fi equipment in the centres of community life, such as town halls, public libraries, museums, public parks or squares.
Because of the great interest in the initiative and to ensure that all available vouchers are allocated, there will be no maximum number of vouchers per participating country for this final call.
The Bulgarian village Chavdar is already enjoying the high-speed free Wi-Fi network
The first WiFi4EU call was opened in November 2018. There were more than 13,000 applications on the portal and 2,800 municipalities from every EU Member State plus Norway and Iceland received vouchers.
The second call in April 2019 registered more than 10,000 applications for 3,400 vouchers. Last September, in the first 2 seconds 1,780 vouchers were distributed as part of the third call.
In 2019, more than 70% of the eligible entities in Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Ireland, Lithuania, Portugal and Slovenia have also received WiFi4EU vouchers.
Up to now, the initiative has proven to be a successful one. The numerous participating municipalities also confirm it. All stakeholders are now looking ahead to all the benefits that the new call will bring.

Due to emergency measures in place in many municipalities, the Commission has decided to postpone the fourth and last Wifi4EU call.
