Greek municipalities will launch free WiFi in public spaces and transport

3,000 wireless access points will be installed over the next few months

The Greek government has announced plans to install approximately 3,000 wireless access points in public areas, including buses and trolleybuses over the next few months.  The free WiFi program, with a total budget of 14.8 million euros, and implemented by the Digital Policy ministry, aims to cover as many areas as possible throughout the country, including islands and top tourist destinations.

The spots where the system will be installed are to be proposed by the respective municipalities and will cover both open-air and enclosed public spaces, such as squares, pedestrian zones, playgrounds, municipal libraries and museums. When the users connect to the free WiFi network, they will not need to fill in any data, but they will have limited time to use it - one hour. The user will be automatically disconnected when time runs out, but all they have to do is repeat the connecting procedure. Upon completion, the project will offer the opportunity for up to 80 people to be connected simultaneously to any given WiFi access point.
