The Polish capital’s first female mayor and the first one to win three terms

After a distinguished career in banking, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz decided to enter politics, first as a parliamentarian and then, in November 2006, as Mayor of Warsaw. She is the Polish capital’s first female mayor and the first one to win three terms. In 2006 she was elected mayor of Warsaw. At the end of November 2014, Warsaw’s Mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz won reelection to an unprecedented third term.

Her program focuses on developing the city through numerous initiatives. Infrastructure and communications are a priority along with support for education and scientific research, creation of sporting facilities and city green areas for outdoor activity. Under her authority, the city has developed a special mechanism for co–financing conservation work on historical monuments that are the property of private owners. Vehicular traffic in the Old and New Towns is restricted, while on the Royal Route it is limited to public transport.
