High tech state-of-the-art library to open in Cologne

The library in Rodenkirchen will open four weeks ahead of schedule and will house high-tech equipment – including a 3D printer and VR headsets

The City Library of Cologne is opening its new district branch in Rodenkirchen on 14 June at 11 AM. That’s four whole weeks ahead of schedule. Visitors of the new library will be pleased to find not only that the edifice has been completely renovated, but also that parts of it have been completely repurposed. Among the new additions, locals will find a brand new children’s library section, a newly designed common workspace that facilitates collaborative reading, learning and working, a café and a guidance system for the visually impaired. The workshop will also boast tons of high-tech gadgets to help visitors with their projects – 3D printers, virtual reality headsets as well as mini-robots.

The building had to be closed down for repairs four months ago and the City Library of Cologne came up with an ingenious idea how to store all the books and information that the Rodenkirchen branch was housing. Visitors were encouraged to take all the books they want home – with no upper limit and no return period, more than 2/3 of the 30,000 books and other media were taken home by citizens.
