To combat the influx of tourists and traffic jams, the municipality wants to discourage the use of cars
Kranjska Gora – an idyllic mountain town, famous for its alpine tourism, ski tournaments and known as an ideal place to practice some winter sports. Apparently, it’s a bit too well known during the summer, with tourists heading in droves to this small Slovenian settlement. Visitors to Kranjska Gora have been making use of the traditionally free parking in the area and have been overcrowding cycling paths and important focal points in and around the town.
To combat this development, the mayor of Kranjska Gora, Janez Hrovat, has begun introducing parking fees at the most central and most visited parking lots in the town. So far three locations have fallen victim to this new policy.
The local government however does not mean for this to create disruptions. Thus, it has introduced a free shuttle service aiming to help travellers. It circulated every day from Monday to Friday, between 11AM and 6PM. The goal of the whole operation is not only to reduce traffic but to also safeguard the environment by discouraging the use of cars. If people start using the local public transport network, the municipality’s carbon footprint would be significantly reduced. To that end, the mayor has stated that he envisions the expansion of the parking fees to other locations in the city in the coming years.
