Some 100 million euros will be used to modernize schools and their equipment in and around the Finnish city
The Finnish city of Lahti is getting ready for a massive overhaul of its educational infrastructure, in line with the country’s national curriculum reform of 2016. The upgrades that will be made to educational institutions in and around the city will be made thanks to the financial support provided by the European Investment Bank (EIB) in the form of a 100-million-euro loan.
The funding that is set to be provided by the EIB will be used for structural and upgrades of schools in Lahti and the surrounding areas. Edifices will be upgraded, renovated and modernized, ultimately making them fit for the modern age.
The entirety of the project is divided into several parts, ranging from small renovation and reconstruction works on some schools to major overhauls and remodelling efforts of others – depending on their need and the severity of the situation. All the upgrades that are currently in the works will ultimately help the buildings meet the highest possible environmental standards and will be made more efficient, healthier and ultimately safer and more pleasant for children. In addition, the modernisation efforts will significantly improve air quality within the schools, which will further protect the health and bolster the performance of staff and students.
Upon signing the agreement, EIB Vice-President Thomas Östros stated that “Finland has implemented one of the most ambitious school redesign projects in Europe, showing a commitment to continue improving the already high-ranking Finnish educational system. With this financing, we will help renew and improve the facilities that will accommodate teaching for the future generation of Finland, something we are pleased to be supporting.”
