The country aims to become a pioneer in renewable energy resources
Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Prime Minister of Greece, officially opened the largest wind power complex in the country on 15th of October. It is located at Kafireas, on the island of Evia - a long and narrow strip of land stretching over a distance of about 180 kilometres. Evia is the second-largest Greek island in terms of area and population, after Crete.
The facility, constructed by Enel Green Power, consists of seven wind farms with a total installed capacity of 154 megawatts, able to generate approximately 480 GWh of power per year. The investment is worth 300 million euro.
According to the calculations of the company, the new wind farm will mean that nearly 495,000 tons of CO2 emissions will not be released into the atmosphere every year from the burning of fossil fuels to generate electricity.
Representative of the Enel Green Power underlined at the opening ceremony that “This important project shines the spotlight on our dedication to renewable energy and decarbonization, aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Objectives, as well as on our commitment to having a diversified mix of power generation in the nation.”
The goal of the Greek government is the country to become a pioneer in renewable energy resources, not only in “green” but also in “blue” development, using available resources in the seas.
The new wind farm is yet another proof of a significant improvement in the investment climate in Greece. The project has also created a large number of new jobs.
TheMayor.EU recalls that Greece has recently received support in this aspect. The European Investment Bank and National Bank of Greece have launched a new green and urban infrastructure investment scheme. They will invest in renewable energy, energy efficiency and urban development projects across Greece. The first agreement is for a total amount of 650 million euros earmarked for infrastructure investments.
