The National Library of Greece (NLG) has entered very successfully into the digital era, giving users access to more than 200 million electronic documents and databases. The already available digital resources can be found directly through the NLG user-friendly website.
The new e-resources page provides information about online resource platforms along with their access links. Users visiting the website of the library have access to resources like the Brepolis Latin Complete Collection, the Portal for the Greek Language or the American Antiquarian Society’s research library.
The aim is to centralize access to all the available resources, not just the ones provided by the NLG. In this way, users carry out all their research from one place. The National Library of Greece is the first in the country to give access to many of these resources, which have been bought or subscribed to.
The system is a brand-new for Greece. Remote access is possible through one simple step - subscribed users must visit the NLG at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens and ask for it. This way, users receive access to the available content from anywhere simply by signing into their NLG account.
Another positive aspect of the project is that it will draw international students who want to study in Greece, as the NLG gives them access to a lot of premium content written in languages other than Greek. By providing content that is not offered by Greek universities, NLG will enhance the academic and research communities in Greece.
The Library has been collecting books, documents, and other material pertaining to Greece’s cultural heritage since 1829. More than 5,000 manuscripts dating back from the 9th to the 20th century are also safeguarded in the library.
