This one is dedicated to travel literature
Today, 14 February, the Culture Ministry of the region of Castilla-La Mancha informed that it will be launching a new virtual reading club. In this case, it will be exclusively dedicated to travel literature and will bear the name ‘Ithaca’ after the home island of Ulysses and alluding to the perilous and adventurous journey the Ancient Greek hero had to endure to return there.
The new club will formally begin operating on 1 March but starting tomorrow interested readers can already sign up for it. It was announced that the first book to be discussed will be Canta Irlanda by Spanish author Javier Pérez Reverte.
Reading has always been an important cultural activity that has many dimensions and implications. This is true at any time and during the current pandemic this fact has taken up even more significant proportions and meaning.
The Castilla-La Mancha authorities recognize that benefit and are also aware that fictional literature consists of many genres and thus attracts different audiences. That is why virtual reading clubs are a successful initiative that was begun already back in 2017 as a means to promote reading and attract as many interest groups to this activity as possible.
Since then, nearly 3000 participants have joined these clubs and more than 100 titles have been read and discussed. The other four clubs are dedicated to classical literature, youth literature, poetry and female writers.
As for ‘Ithaca’, it will be coordinated by María Antonia Moreno Mulas, who is a librarian, cultural manager and a teacher with a wide experience in exercising such a role for reading clubs in different respected institutions since 2004.
The best thing is that people do not have to be registered as library users to join the virtual reading clubs. All they have to do is register online at clubesdelectura.castillalamancha.es/ (in Spanish).
