Parking in Luqa, Malta to be alleviated with smart sensors

Learn more about the IoT technology and how it works

Luqa is yet another Maltese locality that looks actively for smart solutions to the challenges of modern life. As reported by Lovin Malta, the municipality will be introducing a system of smart sensors to tackle the issue of parking spaces. The smart sensors will be installed alongside parking spaces and will be connected to a freely downloadable mobile application with an Internet of Things technology. The application will save drivers a lot of trouble as it will spot free parking spaces and will inform them immediately. The system already works well in another locality – Qormi and is expected to be introduced elsewhere in Malta in the near future.

Furthermore, the innovation is expected to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution significantly, on top of the amount of time and fuel saved by drivers, according to parliamentary secretary for the digital economy Silvio Schembri. “We strive to facilitate access to technology to tackle problems in our localities and it is our vision to offer valuable and viable solutions. Embracing innovation-driven policies and disrupting technologies is the way forward”, he continued.

The project is being realized after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday between the government and the technological company Vodafone, that will be providing the solution. Malta, as an island country, is seen as a great testbed for innovations before scaling up to larger markets.
