Romania is the first EU country that volunteered to purchase and host a stockpile of ventilators on behalf of the European Union. The announcement was made on 6 April by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen for TVR.
“I am proud and grateful that Romania offered to be the first European country to purchase and host, on behalf of the EU, ventilators.” von der Leyen said.
A total of 150 ventilators have already been ordered. They will first arrive in Romania, before being sent to countries that need them, such as Italy and Spain.
In the same interview, The president of the European Commission underlined and praised the initiative of Romania to send a team of doctors and nurses to Italy. “I think this is European solidarity: solidaritate europeană,” she said.
On 19 March 2020, the European Commission informed that it was creating a strategic stockpile of medical equipment, including ventilators and protective masks, to help EU countries in the coronavirus pandemic. The stockpile will include intensive care medical equipment, ventilators, protective equipments, reusable masks, vaccines and different laboratory supplies.
In March, the Commission announced that the stockpile would be hosted by one or several member states. The hosting state/s will be responsible for procuring the equipment.
The European Commission will finance 90% of the stockpile. The Emergency Response Coordination Center will manage the distribution of the equipment to guarantee that it will go where it is needed most.
The European Commission is undertaking such an action for the first time in its h entire istory. The EU institution managed to do this through the civil protection mechanism rescEU.
