A new Cultural Workshop will allow the youth to develop skills and discover their strengths
This August, the Finnish City of Rovaniemi will open a Cultural Workshop for teenagers and young adults. The workshop will be conducted by workers from youth services with the aim of helping people between the ages of 15 and 28 get acquainted with the various opportunities within the field of culture.
The Cultural Workshop will allow individuals to try and learn new things as they engage in numerous different activities. Attendees and participants will have a coach and be a part of a group that will encourage them to grow and understand who they are. More specifically, they will be able to gain a better understanding of their strengths and abilities. In turn, they will find it easier to set goals and make plans for their future.
It is important to reiterate that all employees in the Cultural Workshop will be experienced youth workers with knowledge in the field of culture. Commenting on the aims of the workshop, Education and Community Instructor Catriana Diaz explained:
“The best of all is when a young person begins to trust the future; that in the future, there really is hope; that it is not a leap into the unknown, but an adventure. After all, life is improvision for everyone, and it should not be stressful! There are always new situations. Our goal is for the young person to find their own path.”
In a press release, the City of Rovaniemi reported that the Cultural Workshop will consist of three groups: Verstas, Vartti, and Roti. Taking this further, each of the groups will target different people and offer distinct activities.
The Verstas group has been put together for young adults between the ages of 18 and 28. Participants will be able to take part in a variety of tasks and activities, including filming, recording, writing, and drama. The main aim of this group is to encourage individuals to have an open mind and to try new things.
Vartti, the second group, will target individuals between 17 and 28 years of age. The workshops will take place 1-2 days a week for 4 hours a day. During this time, participants will engage in activities such as creative writing, cooking, crafts, and hiking, among others.
Finally, the Roti group has been designed for 15 to 17-year-old teenagers. Through various tasks, participants will be taught everyday skills to help them grow and develop. What is more, they will become acquainted with the rules of working life and their social skills will be enhanced. In this way, the Cultural Workshop seeks to help them find their strengths so that they can outline their goals for the future at a young age.
With the creation of this workshop, Rovaniemi shows that it is committed to the wellbeing and future of teenagers and young adults.
