Slovenian municipalities guarantee free protective masks for locals

Slovenian municipalities guarantee free protective masks for locals

The mayors of Sveta Trojica and Lenart have been personally engaged with the mission

Weeks after the start of the crisis, the lack of sufficient basic protective equipment remains a problem for many citizens across Europe. That is why authorities ranging from local structures to European ones have been constantly engaged with finding new suppliers of such items

Municipalities are no strangers to taking matters into their own hands and mayors in Slovenia are on the front lines trying to protect their constituents during the pandemic.  Two local governments in the country have already announced that they will be providing masks to all of their citizens free of charge in order to secure and ensure their health and wellbeing.

The local touch

The municipalities in question are Lenart and Sveta Trojica v Slovenskih Goricah. Their mayors have already promised citizens that the local government will take over production and supply of masks due to the fact that there are either not enough of them to go around or their prices have become outrageously high.

In the municipality of Lenart, authorities have already concluded an agreement with two companies to begin production and sewing of protective masks. With a population of just over 8500 people split into some 3000 households, supplying everyone is proving a formidable task.

Nonetheless, work is proceeding as planned with more than a third of the population having already received a batch of the locally-produced protective equipment. Thanks to a donation coming from Ljubljana, local authorities believe that by the end of the week, every citizen of the municipality will have his or her own mask.

The mayor of Lenart Janez Kramberger is adamant that he believes that the municipality will be able to get through this thanks to everyone’s combined efforts, working towards the common good and safety of all residents.
