This recognises the Bulgarian capital’s efforts to promote sports and a healthy way of life
At a press conference, the Mayor of Sofia Yordanka Fandakova has proudly revealed that the Bulgarian capital has received the title “World Capital of Sport 2024”. The “World Capital of Sport” is a joint initiative of the Association of European Cities and Capital of Sports (ACES Europe), UNESCO, and the Sports Committee of the European Parliament. What is more, it is awarded to capitals as recognition of their efforts to promote sports and a healthy lifestyle.
Fandakova expressed her delight at receiving this prestigious title, noting that the municipality has launched various initiatives in the field of sports over the past several years. The mayor went further, highlighting that these achievements were possible as a result of the “Sofia – European Capital of Sport” initiative.
The Bulgarian capital was nominated for this title in 2014 and awarded in 2018. In 2021 alone, 109 sports events have been planned thanks to the “Sofia – European Capital of Sport” initiative.
In addition to the above efforts, the capital has also launched the “Vacation” programme, allowing children and students (ages 6-18) to participate in various sports activities during the summer season. Under this programme, all sports and educational activities were free of charge and designed to promote movement. According to Fandakova, the programme attracted between 900 and 1,500 children each week.
The Mayor of Sofia further explained that the city is currently working on developing sports infrastructure. More specifically, it aims to construct new gyms and PE halls in kindergartens and high schools throughout the capital.
Chairman of the Sofia Municipal Council (SOC) and the Foundation "Sofia - European Capital of Sport" Elen Gerdjikov was reportedly present at Fandakova’s press conference. There, Gerdjikov revealed that the European Capital of Sport Foundation will help prepare Sofia for its World Capital of Sport initiative in 2024.
