Testing the next-generation communications standard at the Port of Hamburg

The new mobile network is expected to significantly increase the data capacities for mobile technologies and applications in Europe as of 2020

After months of preparation, Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), Deutsche Telekom and Nokia have now launched a testbed that stretches across some 8000 hectares of port area. As the port is both a logistics hub and a touristic attraction, it provides an environment for testing a variety of use cases that place very different demands on a 5G network. The main goal is to understand how to adapt best the network to customer requirements.

The new mobile network is expected to significantly increase the data capacities for mobile technologies and applications in Europe as of 2020. It will be ten times faster than LTE with a maximum bandwidth of 10 Gigabit per second. 5G offers a level of security, reliability and speed never seen before in mobile networks.
