Hamburg to nurture tech start-ups in brand new "Science City"
Following the completion and unveiling of the first part of the campus, “Innovation Village”, construction has begun on the 2,600 square meter “Science City”. The ceremony was attended by the mayor of Hamburg, Dr. Peter Tschentscher and deputy mayor Katharina Fegebank.
The Science City project brings together the municipality of Hamburg, the University of Hamburg and DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron) in a joint venture aimed at propelling the city into the future and bring science and industry closer together. The campus itself is aimed at attracting start-ups by offering communal office spaces, meeting rooms, laboratories and over 2,500 apartments for researchers and employees.
According to Prof. Dr. Dr. hc. Dieter Lenzen, President of the University of Hamburg, the main goal of the campus is to transform scientific knowledge into entrepreneurial consequences. “Science that no one knows is not beneficial” he stated. The DESY “Innovation Village”, completed in February, was the first step in that journey as well as the first building block of the whole Science City initiative. The project is expected to be completed by 2021 and will include an Innovation Centre and a Technology and Start-up Centre. The whole of “Science City” is aimed at creating a whole district in Hamburg that combines work, research, study and living – all at once.
