The Latvian Children’s and Youth Folklore Festival is happening over the weekend

On 18 and 19 May enjoy the 35th anniversary of the annual festival "Pulkā eimu, pulkā teku"

The Latvian Children’s and Youth Folklore Festival "Pulkā eimu, pulkā teku" (PEPT) is the culmination of a nationwide programme aimed at familiarizing children and young people from the whole country with Latvia’s cultural heritage and traditions. In the span of a year, participants in PEPT activities have the opportunity to learn more about their nation’s culture by studying traditional songs, dances, plays, games and stories.

PEPT project manager Māra Mellēna emphasizes the important role that a nation’s traditions and cultural heritage play in modern life. In the age of globalizations young people need to have an opportunity to embrace their country’s identity and to be able to pass on the knowledge of older generations to their own children. A strong national identity is paramount for the cultural upbringing of younger generations.

This year’s Children’s and Youth Folklore Festival is taking place in the town of Iecava, famous for its old beekeeping traditions and enterprises. The thematic approach of this year’s edition of PEPT is shaped precisely by the town’s historical background. Participants will be able to learn more about beekeeping from Iecavan masters, about their crafts and farming traditions and about the city itself.
