Citizens and businesses have been making boats out of milk cartons for the Milk Package Boat Regatta
The end of summer doesn’t always have to be a reason for sadness – instead it should be cause for celebration. At least such is the view in the Latvian city of Jelgava, which will be hosting the Milk Package Boat Regatta on 31 August – perhaps the most exciting and peculiar part of the traditional Milk, Bread and Honey Festival.
For the 17th consecutive year, boats made out of milk cartons will head down the Driksa river in Jelgava. The city council will be providing participants with 2000 empty 1-liter milk cartons each, to be used for their boats. The main rule for the Regatta is that only floating vehicles, traveling on top of milk cartons will be allowed to participate in the show. The participants will also be competing for the approval of judges who will be handing out prizes in different categories such as “Most Original Boat”, “Most Innovative Boat”, “Fastest Boat”, “Trickiest Milk Raft” and others.
As mentioned earlier, the event if part of the Milk, Bread and Honey Festival which brings together culinary experts from all around the country. During the festival, visitors will be able to buy and taste fantastic produce, made by the best cooks in Latvia.
