To keep or not to keep Olympic rings on Eiffel Tower: Paris' new debate

The mayor of the city, Anne Hidalgo, believes that the memory of the Games should stay on in some way, others aren’t so sure

This past Saturday, the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, announced her wish to have the Olympic Rings decoration retained in its current place on the Eiffel Tower. The French Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, however, is not convinced that such a decision can be taken lightly and that it merits further discussion.

Mayor Hidalgo’s justification was that the Olympic Games have proven so popular with the French people themselves that they have “fallen in love” with the city all over again. Thus, there was a strong reason to retain the Rings as a reminder of these happy times and to keep that spirit alive.

Messing with heritage sanctity?

The whole idea is a curious throwback to the origins of the most iconic Paris landmark. After all the Eiffel Tower itself was only meant to be a temporary structure as part of the 1889 Paris Expo and residents weren’t too keen on having it stay afterwards as it was considered an eyesore.

In the spirit of deja vu, many of today’s Parisians also fail to appreciate the mayor’s idea, while others approve of it, according to France Bleu.

Social media user Christophe Robin said Ms Hidalgo should have consulted Parisians before going ahead with her plan. The French government is also siding more with that view.

Rachida Dati, the country’s culture minister, reminded the mayor that authorization for the placement of the rings was temporary and that matters of important heritage sites are not just a municipal prerogative.

"Before any decision is made and any announcement is made on the matter, it is important that all procedures and consultations aimed at protecting heritage are respected,” affirmed Dati.

The five rings, representing the continents, are 29m wide, 15m high and weigh 30 tonnes. They were installed on the Eiffel Tower before the Paris Olympics opened on 26 July and were expected to be taken down after the Paralympics' closing ceremony on 8 September.

The plan of the mayor, however, envisions replacing the original rings with lighter copies that would be easier to maintain.
