Earlier this week, the Municipality of Turin informed about the signing of a pact together with Arbolia and RINA, an engineering consultancy and a non-profit company dedicated to providing urban greenery solutions, for the creation of a forest in the Sangone Park (Mirafiori Sud district). The new green space will contain 2100 trees which will help in recycling the carbon dioxide emissions in this area and improving the climate conditions overall in the city.
The whole process of planting over the area of 2 hectares will take up the entire month of April and when completed it will be managed for the first two years by Arbolia. The trees and shrubs which will form the new urban forest will be selected so as to represent the native flora. That means species, such as black poplar, ash, hackberry, maple, viburnum and elder will sink their roots into the ground.
The expected benefit from the added green space is quantified in the following numbers – 100 tons of CO2 and over 4 tons of PM10 will be absorbed by the plants each year.
"Implementing the green heritage of our city with urban forestation solutions, also thanks to partners such as RINA and Arbolia, allows us to think of a more sustainable and resilient development model with an enhancement strategy of ecosystem services generated by the territory and benefits in terms of mitigating the effects of climate change," stated Chiara Appendino, the Mayor of Turin.
Alberto Unia, the local Councillor for Greenery, also mentioned that in recent years the city of Turin, thanks to a consistent forestation policy, has added about 35 thousand new plants to its landscape.
