Since 1961, the Finnish residents of Turku have celebrated their city annually on the third Sunday of September. In 2021, ‘Turku Day’ will take place on 19 September and feature more than 90 events. Understanding that people have different interests, the City of Turku has curated a rich programme to cater and appeal to all residents.
According to a press release, the Kupittaa Community Garden will be a novelty in the 2021 programme. More specifically, it will allow residents to wander through its alleys and take part in guided tours from 12 pm to 4 pm.
In addition to this, the Old Market Square will hold an event from 10 am to 4 pm. The square will feature a stage where one can view various performances, including oriental dance, concerts, and carnival processions, among others. What is more, the Mayor of Turku Minna Arve will make a speech, greeting citizens at noon.
Those who are interested in arts and culture will be pleased to learn that all the museums of the City of Turku will offer free admission on 19 September. These museums and galleries include the Pharmacy Museum and The Qwensel House, the Biological Museum, Kurala Village Hill, Luostarinmäki Crafts Museum, Turku Castle, WAM Turku City Art Museum, Brinkkala Gallery, Scout Museum and Sibelius Museum. Although the Turku Art Museum will not be open, it will hold free architectural tours outdoors.
Churches, parishes, and even Buddhist monasteries will be involved in the 2021 Turku Day. The Cathedral and St. Michael’s Church will host a festive fair and the Turku Orthodox Parish will open its church and the chapel of the Turku Orthodox Cemetery. The Buddhist Monastery Liên Tâm will also welcome guests for the second year in a row. It is interesting to note that Liên Tâm also celebrates the Day of Vietnamese Culture and Culinary Arts on Turku Day.
Aside from the above, residents can also participate in various hiking trails and routes on 19 September. Furthermore, they can explore the Old Town and the River Bank with guided walking tours.
The day will culminate at 9 pm with a fireworks display from Samppalinna Park.
