Twelve municipalities across the Netherlands to plant tiny forests

Twelve municipalities across the Netherlands to plant tiny forests

This is collaboration between the municipalities and the nature organization IVN

Twelve municipalities are going to plant what they call “tiny (or mini) forests”, in order to bring a bit more greenery to their cities. These tiny forests are going to be around the same size as a tennis court and not only will make the cities look nicer, but it also will also help prevent flooding (trees store water – helps if there is a lot of rainfall) and also contribute to biodiversity. This is collaboration between them and the nature organization IVN. The municipalities that will take part in this project are Almere, Alphen aan den Rijn, Apeldoorn, Den Bosch, Goes, Groningen, Hardenberg, Leiden, Maastricht, Meppel, Uithoorn and Utrecht.

Apart from the obvious reasons why planting these tiny forests is helpful to our planet, it will also provide a space where children can learn about the importance of these mini forests. The municipalities plan to hold lessons there for children. They also hope that it will bring more animals to these areas and give them a space to live – something that has become of great importance, especially as people are taking up green space to build homes.
