Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni becomes first Greek city to unveil shared e-bikes

The service will become available for use in early 2022

Last week, the Greek Municipality of Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni announced the introduction of a new modern system of public electric bicycles. With the addition of 15 e-bikes, the municipality is enlarging its current network of micro-mobility means of transportation and further facilitating the lives of its residents.

The electric bicycles will become available for use in early 2022. To rent an e-bike, one would only have to download a mobile application that will allow them to use the service. While the bicycles will initially be located in various random places around the city, the municipality will soon assign parking and return zones.

The first Greek city to introduce such a service

Recently, Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni has strengthened its efforts to become one of the most modern municipalities in the country. This latest initiative highlights this point as the city is now the only one in Greece to have a system of public electric bicycles.

It is important to note that Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni was also one of the first Greek municipalities to introduce a system of public bicycles in 2016. Now, it will enhance and modernise this network in the first quarter of 2022.

Beyond this, Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni was the first – and reportedly still the only – Greek city to have a system of shared electric vehicles. As such, it is not surprising that it has the largest network of electric charging points (20) in the country.

Considering all of these initiatives, it is evident that the municipality seeks to become an inspiration for other cities in terms of sustainable mobility. Commenting on this, Mayor of Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni Grigoris Konstandellos explained:

“The new system of shared electric bicycles significantly upgrades the shared means of transportation that are already operating in the municipality. Our goal is to offer residents and visitors of our city affordable alternative ways of transportation that are environmentally friendly and compatible with the rules of sustainable urban mobility. We continue with intensity the actions that contribute to the creation of a city that utilises technology, respects the environment and is citizen-friendly.”
