Young people in Norddjurs will be able to travel for free from 3 May

By increasing mobility options, the municipality hopes to make life easier for the youth

From 3 May, the Danish Municipality of Norddjurs will allow young people who have a Youth Card to travel for free using Flextur Ung: a flexible alternative to public transport. In a press release on its website, Norddjurs explains that young people living in the countryside face numerous struggles.

First, they are separated from their friends – this makes it extremely challenging to socialise. In turn, many young people often feel excluded and lonely. Moreover, the lack of transportation in the countryside makes them feel reliant on their parents. This is especially true at night when buses do not run, and they have no other way of coming home.

Benefits of the service

Knowing how many obstacles young people face, Norddjurs Municipality decided to increase mobility options. In this way, the municipality hopes to not only help the youth but also encourage them to stay in Norddjurs. Mads Nikolajsen, Chairman of the Children and Youth Committee, commented on this, noting:

“With Flextur Ung, we give young people better opportunities to participate in social life with friends and fellow students, wherever they live in the municipality […] We hope that this will also mean that more young people stay and pursue education in the municipality, so that we can retain them here. I hope that the young people will welcome and use the new offer.”

How does it work?

To use the service, one must first register as a user. Then, they can book their free trip online or via the Flextrafik application. It is important to note that bookings must be made at least one hour in advance.

The free service is available from 6pm to 11pm on weekday evenings and from 6am to midnight on weekends and public holidays (with the exception of 24 and 31 December).
