Bas Verkerk

Bas Verkerk (VDD) has been the acting mayor of Rijswijk since 1 October 2020. He is responsible for Public order, Security, Communication, Regional cooperation and Legal Affairs.

He was born in 1958 in Hoonhorst. He studied Dutch Law with a major in Public Law at the University of Groningen and obtained his master's degree in Law and Planning. During his studies, Verkerk became a student boxing champion.

He has a long career in politics and administration. Prior to becoming a mayor of Rijswijk, he worked as a councillor (1993-2002) and alderman at the Municipality of The Hague on behalf of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy as well as the mayor of Delft (2004-2016), interim mayor of De Bilt (2016-2017), Ommen (2017) and Beekdaelen (2019).

On top of these postings, Verkerk has also served as a lawyer at the Council of State and Vice-President of the European Committee of the Regions.
