Andrey Novakov, Chief Negotiator for EU Cohesion Policy after 2020: I insist for additional 40 billion euro for Cohesion for the next seven-year period

The European Commission has offered 330 billion and his proposal is 372 billion

Yesterday in Sofia, the MEP and Chief Negotiator for EU Cohesion Policy after 2020, Andrey Novakov presented the future of the Cohesion Policy of the EU and the Sofia Urban Development Opportunities. He outlined the framework for negotiations on the next EU multi-annual budget and the opportunities for investment and development through the EU funds in the period 2021-2027.

"It is a little frightening that, looking at the level of absorption of EU funds, it seems that we have more money than good ideas," said Andrey Novakov. According to him, funds remain unused in many countries and they are returned to the European budget. All attempts by countries and organizations to kill this policy will not succeed, but if money are not used, it is the beginning of the end, warned Novakov. He noted that this is a policy that is unprecedented in the history of humanity - in peacetime a free state, without being obliged, to transfer its wealth to another in order to be able to catch up with its development.

Novakov said that he insists for € 40bn more for cohesion over the seven-year period of 2021, and recalled that the European Commission had offered 330bn and his proposal was 372bn. Novakov criticized the idea that in the next multi-annual EU budget the new challenges would shift old policies and pointed out that there is no other policy that has achieved such results.
