Today, the Greek capital announced that it will soon become sister cities with the American City of Boston. This decision was made by the Mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyannis and the newly elected Mayor of Boston Michelle Wu during the Greek politician’s official visit to the United States last week.
By becoming sister cities, Athens and Boston will both benefit in several ways. First, the leaders will share good practices and exchange knowledge. This will allow them to strengthen their efforts in combating the climate crisis, accelerating the digital transition, and promoting ecosystems for young entrepreneurs in both countries.
In addition to benefiting the economies, the twinning will also strengthen the Greek capital’s reputation as a tourist destination, attracting more American visitors than ever before. Taking a case in point, a direct flight will now link the two cities for the first time in 25 years; in other words, travelling from one city to the other will become faster and easier than it has been in decades.
Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis commented on the twinning, sharing: “Boston, the “Athens of America” is the home of a very large and extremely active Greek-American community. It is a city with which I have strong personal ties.
But, above all, Athens and Boston are associated with a strong tradition, which is a reminder of our common principles and values, especially at a time when the Western Republic is under barbaric attack by the dark forces of authoritarianism and tyranny. We discussed with Mayor Michelle Wu that we will bring the two cities even closer with mutual benefit for our citizens."
