Video surveillance is set to be implemented in public spaces by summer 2020

Ayia Napa will be the first municipality in Cyprus to have Closed-circuit television CCTV, also known as video surveillance installed in public spaces, announced the office of the mayor Yiannis Karousos. The cameras are expected to be installed by the summer of 2020. The municipality informed that it was decided following a proposal made by the town, and that CCTV would help to protect public property.

“The proposal of the municipality is in line with the recommendations of the Personal Data Commissioner, and it was reviewed by the police as well. Ayia Napa will be the first municipality in Cyprus to install CCTV within the boundaries of the municipality for the protection of public property” explained the mayor’s office.

The municipality will be the only entity processing the footage from the cameras, with the aim to protect the personal information of the public. “This is crucial and essential measure, which will drastically improve safety and enhance the sense of security in the municipality, as it will act to reduce crime and help with investigations in actions against public property. Residents and tourists of Ayia Napa municipality will be safe and feel safe” said Yiannis Karousos, mayor of Ayia Napa.
