Bolzano to be certificated as ComuneClima GOLD

The program rewards municipalities that are committed to a sustainable energy policy and sustainable local development

Having obtained its SILVER certification in 2018, the Italian municipality of Bolzano is now taking yet another step forward in the ComuneClima program as it is preparing to receive a GOLD certificate. Thus, the South Tyrolean capital would be the first Italian municipality boasting such a recognition.

Sustainable energy policy and local development

The ComuneClima program was launched in 2016 by the CasaClima Agency to support and reward municipalities that are committed to enforcing a sustainable energy policy as well as sustainable local development. The quality monitoring and certification energy management system for municipalities, promoted by the international network, brings together over 1,600 local authorities across Europe.

The program bestows awards for the management of energy and climate protection policies and is based on the internationally-recognized system of the European Energy Award - a system that allows for the analysis, evaluation and, consequently, improvement of the measures taken by the municipalities in the different areas of their competence.

The possibilities for upgrades are endless and include the fields of energy planning and mobility, energy and water consumption of buildings and municipal plants, the production of energy from renewable sources at a local level, waste collection and valorisation systems, water supply and disposal, sustainable mobility, as well as raising awareness and creating involvement of stakeholders and citizens.

According to the Municipality of Bolzano, the city should be able to reach the GOLD level, the highest certification level, thanks to the new projects aimed towards the safety of the territory and adaptation to climate change, the energy planning for 2030 and the renovation of municipal buildings. All this, on top of the local government's achievements in the field of sustainable mobility and information and awareness-raising activities, allowed authorities to involve citizens in solving sustainability issues.
