One year after imposing a general prohibition of single-use plastic boxes, Brussels Region is banning light plastic bags from 1 September. The ban applies to all bags under 50 micrometers, whether they are of the type issued at cash registers to carry out purchases or are used for loose goods.
The ban applies to all Brussels retailers of loose goods, such as markets, grocery stores, supermarkets, drug stores, jewelry stores, hardware stores and pharmacies. However, exceptions are being made for fruits, vegetables, and humid, liquid products, which can be sold in bio-sourced bags. It is to be noted that bags over 50 micrometers thick are still authorized.
