Connected mobility – getting there quicker with EU funding

Connected Vehicles’ technology allows cars to communicate with one another and with their surroundings. Many vehicles already have included this kind of functionality in the form of navigation systems that receive traffic data and inform drivers about alternative routes. The Hagenberg Campus of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria is taking that to the next level with models that forecast future traffic situations. The system proposes alternative routes based on predicted rather than current congestion.

Each vehicle provides information about its current location and where it is heading. This information is used to provide a dynamic picture of the future traffic situation and redirect vehicles to avoid traffic jams. The suggestion of the navigation system for new routes is then based not on an already occurred traffic jam, but on its forecast. The EU is funding the project at EUR 635 120, contributing more than 80 percent to the total cost of EUR 793 900.
