Croatian rail purchases 21 new electric trains

Croatian rail purchases 21 new electric trains

The vehicles will be delivered and put into circulation by December 2023

The Croatian railways operator, HŽ Putnički prijevoz, has agreed on a purchase of 21 new electric trains from Končar Electric Vehicles. The new trains will be delivered over the next couple of years and will grow into the backbone of Croatia’s railway revitalization push.

Going all-out in environmentally friendly transformation

Of the 21 trains purchased by the Croatian railways, 11 will be used for urban and suburban traffic, while the rest will go into service on regional lines, promoting and boosting connectivity between Croatia’s cities and regions.

Furthermore, they offer excellent travelling conditions making them even more appealing to consumers and citizens on the lookout for different mobility alternatives. These vehicles are low-floor trains that allow for a quick change of passengers and are adapted to people with reduced mobility. They are equipped with a passenger information system, video surveillance and wireless internet access, and passengers have space for bicycles and additional luggage.

Procurement of new electric trains improves the quality of the entirety of the service, the reliability and availability of vehicles that boast much lower operating costs and create the possibility of increasing train frequency and number of passengers. Not only that but the new trains contribute significantly to reducing environmental pollution and are crucial to Croatia’s transformation into a more climate-friendly country.

The total value of the Contract is HRK 844.7 million. The production of new electric trains will be financed by EU funds within the Operational Program "Competitiveness and Cohesion" 2014-2020 (85%) and the State Budget of the Republic of Croatia (15%). The delivery deadline for the first electric train for urban-suburban transport is 24 months after the signing of the contract, after which another 20 will steadily be handed over and put into circulation. The delivery deadline for all trains is December 2023.
