Cyprus plots ways to promote travel by bike

Cyprus plots ways to promote travel by bike

The country’s transport ministry is preparing a package of incentives for cycling worth over 500,000 euros

The Cypriot transport ministry is looking for ways to make cycling more attractive as part of its efforts to transform the nature of mobility on the island and make it more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Choosing a sustainable and healthy way of life

The way the Cypriot government wants to approach the subject is via different kinds of incentives which would make it easier for citizens to take the first step in transforming their mobility behaviours.

These incentives will be worth over 500,000 euros that have been allocated for this specific purpose by authorities as well as a package of some 15 measures that officials can begin implementing in the near future.

Some of the ideas featured in the government’s plans include investing in cycling infrastructure extensions, especially those leading to schools, sports and training centers, subsidizing citizens for the purchase of new bicycles as a primary means of transportation, subsidizing the repair and maintenance of an existing bicycle, the free transport of bicycles in public transport vehicles and the construction of covered and safe bicycle stations.

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works is of the belief that in a country like Cyprus, with its short distances and Mediterranean climate, bicycles can become a true alternative choice of transportation, limited not only to sports and entertainment.

The Ministry further stated that it “has set very high the bar on the issue of using the bicycle as a means of transportation. We have selected 15 actions, several of which can be implemented immediately. " In order to achieve that goal, the newly-created Bicycle Use Promotion Council will meet at least 3 times a year in order to monitor the implementation of the various decisions and the implementation of the government’s long-term strategy.
