Not too long ago, sending letters via post was the main method of communication. However, with the rise in technology and digitalisation, people quickly turned away from postcards and handwritten correspondences.
While it is true that we now prefer sending emails and text messages, the tradition of mailing Christmas cards during the holiday season is still present in many countries. What is more, the outbreak of COVID further promoted this tradition as people seek ways to engage in more personal and sentimental methods of communication than emails, texts, and calls.
Last month, the Czech Post unveiled a Christmas-themed stamp that is sure to make people’s Christmas cards and letters even more special. While Christmas stamps are not a novelty, the new Czech stamp is unique in that it has a festive scent. Commenting on this original idea, the Head of Stamp Making at the Czech Post Martin Holý shared:
“Christmas is perhaps the most beautiful time of the year. Although the volume of letters and postcards in the Czech Post delivery network has been declining for several years now, the tradition of sending Christmas cards to loved ones and friends is still popular, especially in today’s COVID era. Perhaps that is why we wanted to make this tradition special and add to its importance. We believe that thanks to the fragrant stamps, we will succeed.”

The new stamps feature classic Christmas motifs such as festive decorations, twigs, and gingerbread cookies. Moreover, locals report smelling hints of cloves, gingerbread, and Christmas punch on the new stamp.
One can purchase the special stamps for CZK 19 (EUR 0.75) and use them to post letters that weigh up to 50 grams. The Czech Post has printed 3.5 million pieces of the Christmas-scented stamps.
