The Mayor of Ādaži Māris Sprindžuks and the Mayor of Carnikava Daiga Mieriņa met yesterday to sign an agreement between the two municipalities which gave the start of a joint District Development Program for the period 2021-2027. This was organized in view of the upcoming administrative reform in Latvia which will merge the two municipalities next year.
Ādaži and Carnikava, located near the coast of the Gulf of Riga, are slated to become one municipality after the municipal elections in 2021, with the former becoming the titular seat. To that end, the two mayors decided to launch an early partnership program which will synchronize development programs with the aim of better distribution of resources.
Representatives from the business, civic and social economy sectors can apply to participate in the program until 20 August. The Program itself envisions five working areas that will oversee projects, namely – economic development; education, sports and culture; health and social issues; spatial planning; and environment.
The first draft of the program is expected to be ready by the end of this year, and the final plan will be published in May 2021. The reason behind this early start is so that residents will be able to use the time to adjust their perceptions about municipal boundaries and start thinking as being part of a new single unit.
And why was the program horizon extended all the way until 2027?
"Considering that the next programming period of the European Union funds is 2021-2027, a new development program is needed in order not to hinder the development of important projects. I call on the residents, entrepreneurs and organizations of the region to be actively involved in order to coordinate future plans when EU financial resources will be available,” said Daiga Mieriņa, the chairman of the Carnikava County Council.
