Europe will take a minute of silence on 24 March

On Wednesday 24 March, you can join Eurocities for a moment of silence to honour and mourn those we have lost in the past year

A year ago, the world first witnessed the outbreak of the Coronavirus. Some of us lost our jobs and some of us lost our loved ones. Either way, every single one of us was forced to helplessly stand by and watch as our lives were turned upside down.

Now, the pandemic has taken the lives of over 2.68 million people around the world. For this reason, the city network Eurocities is hosting a joint commemoration event, inviting all of Europe to come together for a minute of silence.

On Wednesday 24 March at 12:00 CET, everyone is invited to join a video livestream where we will pause and take a moment of silence. On this day, we will remember the ones we have lost and we will think of those who are suffering.

Find strength together

The President of Eurocities and Mayor of Florence Dario Nardella commented on the event: “Europe needs a joint moment of reflection. Let us pause for a minute to mourn the dead, to honour those suffering from the consequences of the pandemic, and to reflect on our own situation – to take a breath in the hectic everyday struggle we all experience.

I invite everyone to join and to be silent together for a moment, to commemorate, and to find new strength together.”

As the current circumstances make it impossible to hold a live event, Eurocities has created a video livestream where anyone can join Dario Nardella to pause, mourn, honour, and reflect.

The video livestream can be accessed on 24 March via Youtube here.
