Mayor Domenico Giangiordano is hoping to use the recently refurbished castle to liven up his depopulating town and turn it into a popular destination
Roccascalegna, a medieval village in the central Abruzzo region, is available to hire out for weddings, cocktail parties, birthdays, anniversaries and other once-in-a-lifetime events for a giveaway price. Known as the Castle in the Sky, the newly renovated fortress has its own chapel for ceremonies, a tower transformed into a cocktail bar, and the renovated dungeons are now open for candlelit dinners. There are no roads leading there. Cars are parked at the entrance of the village and guests need to climb old donkey trails , which makes the venue even more exclusive and attractive.
The idea is part of the strategy of the mayor Domenico Giangiordano to turn its depopulating town in an attractive and popular destination. He is even offering his own services as wedding planner and says local businesses can provide the catering, including a grandmother known for her traditional wedding cakes. Other traditional specialties offered to the soon-to-be-married are pallotte cace e ova (meat balls with grated Pecorino sheep cheese and eggs), Pizza Scima, (a white wine and olive oil flat bread), arrosticini lamb skewers, fiadone ricotta cheese pie and crespelle sweet-and-sour waffles.
