Free public transport and entry to cultural and sports events for all pupils in Romania

Free public transport and entry to cultural and sports events for all pupils in Romania

Local authorities must organize the public transport to ensure that students get to their schools

The children enrolled in the compulsory education system at high schools and vocational schools in Romania will be able to use the local public transport free of charge, according to new provisions of the Education Law adopted by the Senate,  announced profit.ro.

All forms of public transport (overground, underground and naval), county wide and in between counties are covered by the new provisions. Up to now, Romanian pupils have enjoyed a discount of minimum 50% on all forms of local public transport. The county councils and the local councils have to organize the public transport in such a way as to ensure the transportation  of students to their schools.

Furthermore, the transport expenses for students who cannot attend school in their home town will be covered by the Education Ministry, through the educational units they attend. If they reside in a boarding school or under rent, they will be covered the value of 52 return trips on an annual basis. Before the new provisions, only a travel pass for a distance of maximum 50 kilometres or the value of 8 return trips per semester were covered.

In addition, all students will receive free entrance to museums, theater and opera, concerts, movie screenings and other cultural and sport events organized by public institutions.

Bucharest offers free public transport for students

One year ago, Bucharest introduced free public transport for students. The students in the Romanian capital are able to use the overground public transport for free. This benefit applies also to students aged up to 18 who attend classes in the accredited and authorized pre-university system. The public transport is free for all students in the 11th and 12th grades.
