French supermarkets are banned from throwing out unsold food

Each year 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted worldwide

French supermarkets are banned from throwing out unsold food. Edible food must instead be donated to charity. Before the ban, 7.1 million tons of food was wasted every year. Consumers threw away more than two-thirds of that amount, 15% was binned by restaurants, while shops were responsible for 11%of the food waste.

After the ban, France wastes less food than any other country in the world. Stores which do throw away usable food face heavy fines. The rest of the food becomes animal feed. France now throws away just 1.8% of its total food production each year. And it’s inspiring other countries as well. There are efforts to introduce the same laws across the EU. Each year 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted worldwide.
